These are the first in a series of stoned ramblings about old-school cannabis with Angus of The Real Seed Company and Macky and co of High on Home Grown.
The photo shows Ganesh Baba, a Bengali sadhu whose epic cannabis consumption and chillum-fuelled wisdom drew Westerners to him during the heyday of the Hippie Trail.
Two tolas of ganja – just under an ounce – was the standard load for a Ganesh Baba chillum, countless of them burning morning to night.
Ganesh Baba imparted his knowledge from within clouds of smoke that his listeners compared to the rolling mists of the Darjeeling Himalaya – where wandering hippies first encountered him in the late 60s.
Touring America at the end of his life in the 80s, he liked to turn his fire on pretension and cant, particularly the main notion to emerge from the days of the Hippie Trail, the teaching of ‘Be Here Now’:
“‘Here and now,’ my foot! There is no here and now. Before you have said ‘here and now’ your here and now has gone, don’t you know that, Ram Dass? Your ‘here and now’ is a will of the wisp, and you are like a fellow running after the mirage of Maya…. So these people pose holiness!”
Deep!
